European pioneers of human-based microphysiological systems (MPS) announce the launch of

of IAMPS – the Industry Alliance for Microphysiological Systems, dedicated to advancing MPS technologies.

This alliance was formed by leading innovators in next gen human biology platforms  – AlveoliX (Switzerland), BiomimX (Italy), chiron (Netherlands), Dynamic42 (Germany), InSphero (Switzerland), MIMETAS (Netherlands), NETRI (France), React4Life (Italy), and TissUse (Germany).

Its establishment comes at a pivotal phase in the evolution of biomedical research. Scientific policymakers worldwide are increasingly recognising the need to move away from animal experimentation and toward human‑relevant in vitro systems. Yet this commitment has not fully translated into concrete, actionable steps that expand funding and accelerate the validation of human‑based platforms. The ability of end-users and regulatory authorities to prevent the significant harm caused by poorly predictive animal models will depend on how quickly and effectively human‑relevant in vitro platforms are developed, validated, and adopted. In the context of accelerated funding and regulatory initiatives across American agencies in favour of complex in vitro methods, it is critical that the European industry aligns with this global recognition, all while remaining competitive and autonomous.

To address these challenges and drive the progress of human-relevant biology, IAMPS will represent a unified, coordinated industry voice for MPS developers that engages constructively with all relevant national and global stakeholders, including end-users, regulators and policy makers.

IAMPS's key priorities will be to:

  • Collaborate with the national, EU and international agencies to increase acceptance of data obtained from MPS and achieve concrete progress on the EU Life Science Strategy’s objective of de-risking clinical trials

  • Create data-sharing platforms between MPS developers and end-users, in particular the pharmaceutical industry and major CROs, to build retrospective case-studies on the predictive value of current devices, and co-develop future devices tailored to end-users’ scientific priorities

  • Advance the qualification and standardization of MPS devices in collaboration with EU agencies

  • Ensure that EU funding programs and legislation fully consider the need to develop a robust MPS industry as a strategic priority

  • Secure reliable domestic biobanking sources of cells and tissues to ensure that MPS providers and end-users have the capacity to accurately reflect the diversity of the European population and its needs

The alliance is led by Thibault Honegger (NETRI), President of IAMPS, Paola Occhetta (BiomimX), Vice‑President for Regulatory Adoption, and Jos Joore (MIMETAS) Vice‑President for Legislation and Programmes at IAMPS.

“ We are at a critical moment for NAMs, with a strong push from international regulatory bodies in 2025, including explicit guidance for several contexts of use to phase out animal models. Although the EMA has been working on NAMs for a long time, there is an urgent need for the global health industry to work with industrial MPS providers. This will benefit both the needs of the global health industry as well as the expectations of regulatory agencies. Europe invented this field: now, we are organising amongst ourselves to own its future. As a joined IAMPS force, we’re committed to establishing MPS as a strategic European technology, driving growth in the industry, as well as scientific progress and public health improvements. Together with Paola and Jos, and the support of our board of directors, IAMPS is ready to shape the future of NAMs in Europe, and throughout the world. ” commented Thibault Honegger.

In the near future,  IAMPS will welcome new corporate members and associates from the MPS industrial sector or with a direct interest in the success of the European MPS sector.
